Before installing an APK: eight checks
Eight practical checks for an Android APK: publisher, source, release metadata, permissions, security prompts and privacy information.
An APK can look familiar and still be unrelated or modified. These checks help you make a more informed choice; they cannot certify a file as safe.
- Find the publisher independently. Do not use an unsolicited message or pop-up as your starting point.
- Match the app identity. Compare developer name, package ID and official listing where available.
- Confirm release metadata. Check version, date, size and changelog against a publisher-controlled source.
- Check the signature or hash. Only compare values if the publisher provides a trusted reference.
- Read permissions. Unexpected SMS, contacts, accessibility or device-admin access deserves scrutiny.
- Keep device protection on. Do not disable Android warnings to force an install.
- Read privacy terms. Understand what data the app says it collects and how to contact its publisher.
- Stop when unsure. Avoid modded builds, “unlimited reward” claims and pressure tactics.
